(BGO) - Bac Giang has room to develop agricultural raw material areas for processing, but many localities have not yet tapped this advantage. Many processing enterprises in the province still have to purchase agricultural products from other provinces and cities, making production costs high and products less competitive.
Potential yet to be tapped
Bac Giang boasts great potential for developing fruit trees and is one of the few localities in the country having the advantage of growing winter crops (for processing). The total area of winter crops in the province is about 13,000 hectares, with output estimated at 230,000 tonnes per year. In addition, the province also has tens of thousands of hectares of fruit trees. Each year it also provides to the market more than 220,000 tonnes of meat of all kinds and about 150 million poultry eggs.

Currently, the province has more than 140 food processing establishments. Of which, there are four large enterprises namely Global Food Import and Export Joint Stock Company, GOC Export Food Processing Joint Stock Company, Vifoco Import Export Joint Stock Company, and Dung Sy General Investment Company Limited), processing agricultural products for the domestic market and exporting to Eastern European countries, Russia, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia...
The main products are canned sweet corn, vegetables, radishes, potatoes, pumpkins, tomatoes, pineapples, lychees and oranges, with total output reaching more than 10,000 tonnes per year. The rest are those made by small-scale processing establishments, processed pork and beef for consumption in the province, with 3.5 tonnes per day on average.
Despite the province’s great potential of land and agricultural products, the four processing enterprises mentioned above are currently purchasing tens of thousands of tonnes of raw materials such as carrots, sweet corn, passion fruit, pumpkin and cabbage in Hai Duong, Hoa Binh and some southern provinces. Meanwhile, many localities such as Son Dong, Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Tan Yen, and Hiep Hoa can all build vegetable and fruit growing areas meeting the needs of these enterprises.
“Leading” businesses and administration support needed
In recent years, many localities in the province have developed farm produce associated with OCOP products, obtaining positive results. Thanks to the right orientation, farmers in these localities earn trillions of VND from agricultural production per year.

According to the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development of Son Dong district, along with the development of the forest economy, in recent years, people in the district have actively converted and developed trees of high economic value such as lychee, apple, guava, grapefruit, and herbal plants...
Although there has been a development orientation and planning, not only Son Dong district but many localities have not yet tapped the potential of agricultural land. Many places have abandoned winter crops. Farmers in some places are still struggling with the problem of planting and cutting fruit trees because of spontaneous farming.
During a trip to inspect the production situation at the beginning of the year in Son Dong district, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Le O Pich said that Son Dong district in particular and localities in the province in general should continue to create available land funds for enterprises and cooperatives to invest as well as form links in production and consumption of products.
Local authorities need to provide policy support and proactively invite experts to train farmers in farming techniques and advise the local authorities on how to improve the land, select plants and animals suitable for each region to develop agricultural products.
He called on businesses and cooperatives to soon invest and form linkages to build production models in Bac Giang, thereby creating trust and "leading" farmers to follow. It is necessary to strive to make Bac Giang not only a potential land but also a material area for agricultural product processing for enterprises in the province and the country.
