CIAI project provides Son Dong children with nutrition and education

(BGO) – The Association for Protection of the Children’s Right (APCR) in Bac Giang province has coordinated with the Italy Center for Aid to Children (CIAI/ An Italy – based Non-Governmental Organization) in Vietnam to conclude the project of “providing nutrition and education to children of poor families in Son Dong district”.

The event was attended by leaders of the CIAI in Vietnam, several departments, agencies and sectors as well as the provincial APCR, People’s Committee, People’s Council and Son Dong district authorities.

With the total expense of some 7 billion VND (307,100 USD), the project has been implemented proactively in 21 communes having many children of poor families in Son Dong district for over 10 years.

It targeted at improving the rights of assessing to healthcare services and basic education to the local kids and households in the valid area. The project covered a wide range of activities including multi-level intervention of commune, school, community as well as kids’ direct interference such as education, healthcare, sanitation, nutrition and capability improvement.

Regarding the education, the project annually provided each participating child with a set of schoolbook and necessary studying tool while presenting the scholarship to the students of the vocational school, college and university. Particularly, the project handed over 1,602 sets of schoolbook from 2013 – 2018 whereas 85 bicycles were gifted to 85 students of secondary and high schools from 2014 – 2017 who are 5 kilometers away from the school.

In term of the medical sector, it focused on organizing regular healthcare examination to all children, professional ophthalmology and dental checkups to 427 children, adding to the facilitation of the accommodation and travel expenses for the kids under treatment in the higher level facility. Besides, 190 pregnant mothers were trained on enhancing the knowledge of safe motherhood and healthy children while 150 others participated in regular prenatal check-ups.

The project has been implemented proactively in 21 communes having many children of poor families in Son Dong district for over 10 years.

To raise the awareness of family sanitation and self-care, the project provided the package of healthcare twice per year to 100 percent of participating children, including the necessary utensils like shampoo, bath shower gel, soap, towel, bath towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, first aid tool among others.

Aiming at improving the nutrition regime and income, 730 young households were trained under a basic course of chicken breeding and vegetable farming technique that brought high effectiveness ideally suiting to the geology, weather and individual capability. Also, the project supplied the rice to 728 children in two years; concretely 80 kilograms of rice per kid in 2013 and 93 kilograms in 2014, helping partially support their families and bring a better caring.

Apart from that, the women leader and officers in 21 communes joined 23 training courses about the knowledge and skills of operating collaboration, working with project counterparts and children’s families as well as issues relating to disadvantaged kids for 5 years. Additionally, the parents and residents in the project area were provided with training on nutrition, sanitation, reproduction health, congenital hemolytic-uraemic syndrome among others; thus getting more information to conduct in real life.
